Proving that, once again, Doug DeMuro bought the wrong car, is this 1989 Ferrari Testarossa. It's finished in a lovely shade of HolyGodThatIsSomeGoodShit White. It has 29,100 miles with its last service completed 2,800 miles ago in 2008. Priced to go at $59,000.00 and is located in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. Yeah that is a problem. I'm so used to that risk that I forgot that better design and build quality could have reduced the probability of it happening. I've just accepted it as a possibility with a Ferrari and focused on all build quality aspects besides that.

Gallardos and R8s have burnt to a crisp too. I wonder why you don't hear that much about 911s and Caymans burning up even though they are way more common.

Is it because Porsche is doing a better job with design and how they put things together? Or is it because people are less likely to take pics of Caymans and 911s burning and post them to the web because they're not considered as special as the more rare cars?

That's a good question. Maybe the Germans are just that good at putting cars together. I think the Italians have a "fuck it" kind of attitude towards their lasting build quality, which is a shame.

That was my guess too. But why have R8s roasted to the ground? There are way less R8s on the road than Caymans. The fact that there is some press about R8s roasting makes me think that Caymans should roast every day. Both are German.

Maybe it's due to displacement? I guess a V8 or V10 generates a lot more heat than a flat 6.

From what I can gather from the research I've done the Italians did a lot of the original Gallardo V10 design with some help from Ze Germans.

But Ze Germans designed the direct injected V10 that went in the 2009 and later Gallardo and in the R8. So I don't think Ze Germans can blame the R8 fires excessive espresso & pizza breaks in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

I like how you're already making fun of Europeans. Now that I think about it, I've always watched videos/read things that say the R8 is a great machine, and will run for awhile if given proper care. They put the regular, unmodified production V10's into their racecars. That's how good they are. Maybe it's just the nature in which people drive the cars, not the cars themselves.

we need a scientific way to track car fires for all makes and models. insurance companies need to release stats. the public has a right to know damn it!

the r8 is built so damn well. maybe it's only burnt to the ground twice ever. who knows. maybe porsches burn all the time but nobody talks about it. maybe a C6 Z06 is just as likely to burn as a Ferrari 360. probably not. but we can't know for sure as i don't think there is real data available to the public, is there? we just know people take pics of exotic looking cars and post them to the web.
